Steve Geraci and Team Us are at the helm of Ball State's Student Government Association.
"Let the games begin," Geraci said to those present at the slate's inauguration Wednesday afternoon.
Let the work begin, as well.
Geraci, along with Vice President Chris Kurtz, Secretary Kari Jones and Treasurer Mike Gallion have a challenging future ahead of them, as any other SGA slate before them has. Aside from the regular array of platform issues and altering agendas with student and university senates, slates must also deal with spontaneous issues that come up along the way.
The unexpected, if you will.
Geraci said communication would be the slate's priority coming into the position, and we couldn't agree more. Team Us follows in the footsteps of Team Tietz's excellent record of communication, a record that must continue to be built upon. Especially with unanticipated circumstances, communication is the only way to continue fostering growth.
In the communication it has had thus far, Team Us has made a lot of promises within its platform and its words. These are promises that this slate will now come face-to-face with over the course of the next 12 months.
In February, shortly after being announced as SGA's next president, Geraci told the Daily News editorial board the then-public platform the slate was using was merely a running platform that could, and probably would, change as time went on. The site that used to present Team Us' platform now only displays a link to an e-mail address where one can be requested.
One of Team Us' earlier platform issues was allowing students 24-hour accessibility to key features of BSU's student services Web site. We hope that, with the creation of a new SGA Web site, Team Us' platform will have that same 24-hour accessibility. Until then, the slate's goals and mission remain somewhat mysterious.
Before we are quick to criticize, though, it should be noted that the team showed progress even before its term officially started.
Ball State students received an e-mail from University Computing Services earlier this week saying that the student services Web site's operating hours had been extended from 9 p.m. until 11 p.m. At Wednesday's ceremony, Geraci said a phone call from his slate to UCS helped to achieve that goal.
It's the first of many calls Geraci and Team Us will make while serving the Ball State student body. In the grand scheme of things, though, these are mere baby steps on the giant walk that lays ahead for Team Us.
