At 5 p.m. Friday, the application process will close for one of the most coveted student positions on campus.
Right now, it seems as if no one wants it.
Ball State is currently looking for the next student to appoint to the university's Board of Trustees. Ultimately, a student committee will review the applications and forward a select few on to Gov. Mitch Daniels, who will then make the final decision.
The fact that few students have applied brings us to wonder how and why so many students can complain about current situations, e.g., the Student Government Association presidential race, but still not put forth the effort to make a difference personally.
Arguably, the student spot within the trustees has the possibility to help influence and debate popular student issues such as tuition, finances and regulations. The board position is equal to that of any other adult or community leader already serving, proving unparalleled duties to any other student leadership position on campus. It's requirements are not difficult: have at least a 2.7 GPA, be an Indiana resident, be a student for the entire two-year term and, lastly, provide two letters of recommendation.
When it comes to the long-term position and goal of Ball State University, this is a seat that has a powerful voice.
With all of the student outcry and concern over issues from the past year and a half, we would expect to see some tough competition to fill the shoes of the departing Kyle Mitchell.
However, as of Tuesday, SGA had passed a handful of applications out, but had not had any turned back in to them.
For students looking to impact the future of Ball State University, now is the time to care. With only days remaining before the application deadline, it's not too late to start if your effort is truly dedicated.
Countless students have expressed their concern for the university in recent days. We hope they will show their thought and care by applying for this position on time.
And remember, deadlines matter.
