LETTER: Schiavo deserves equal chance at life despite problems

Dear Editor,

The article Jessica Kerman wrote entitled "Schiavo case a government distraction" that appeared in the Friday Daily News upsets me, because she obviously doesn't know any more about the issue than what she has read in the paper in the last week.

Terri Schiavo is not just a non-responsive vegetable that lies in a bed. She is quite conscious and responds to interactions with people, objects and sound. You can go to www.terrisfight.net and watch videos that show you this. One shows her with obvious pleasure on her face during a visit from her mother. When her mom comes in, you can see her try to smile and continue to try. Another video shows a balloon being passed over her where she tracks it with her eyes and even head movements. It is obvious that she is still a conscious human being, she just has a severe disability. A complete vegetative state implies the person is unresponsive, which Terri is certainly not. Her husband barely tried to give her any rehabilitation therapy, which doctors have said could improve her situation. A nurse who worked at the hospice where Terri is says Terri feels pain and the nursing staff medicates her for that pain. This nurse says she was fired because she expressed support for keeping Terri alive.

There is also evidence Terri's husband has a pattern of unusual and perhaps even violent behavior. Near the beginning of the case, there was some thought that abuse by her husband might even have contributed to the reason Terri collapsed in the first place, but since it would be so hard to prove, it has not been pursued as it should be. He has also remarried and started a new family, which in my book means Terri should no longer by his responsibility, instead her parents' responsibility.

Jessica mentioned that "several doctors have testified during trials that she has little to no possibility for recovery." "Little to no." That does not mean she has absolutely no chance! It reminds me of those people who think children who are born disabled should be terminated to keep them from the harsh life they will live. Just because someone can't have a normal life doesn't mean they shouldn't be given a chance at life.
