LETTER: Current meal plans do not fit with busy student schedules

Dear Editor,

I am a freshman, and this year has been full of the new experiences that come with the transition of moving away from your home for long periods of time. Of course, everyone is most concerned with their housing situation and where their next meal is going to come from. It is the latter which I would like to address. One of the biggest annoyances is trying to fit the meal plan into my day. The time parameters and the constant loss of meals seems like such a waste to me.

I am on the 14-meal plan with an extra $50 for dining plus, and tacked on to that is another $50 for premium package I am signed up for. This means I can get two meals a day for seven days, and an extra $100 for...? My problem with this whole plan is I feel like I am wasting SO much money. I am obligated to buy food at certain times of the day, and if I don't, then I simply lose the money. I can only buy one meal of a certain time each day. For example I can only have one breakfast, one lunch or one dinner. So if I miss my breakfast and lunch because I am extremely busy (which happens a lot) I cannot simply buy two dinners and avert losing an entire meal's worth of a dining credit. So for that day I only get one meal and lose the others. I have no way of avoiding this and have on numerous occasions simply forfeited my meal because I have no choice.

Not to mention the $100 of dining plus that I have to use for a semester that is only good for food items. Last semester I wound up with more than $40 dollars left and only a week left to spend it. I basically wasted all of this money on items I could bring home and feed to my brother. It was mostly candy and junk food.

I am upset about this because I can be using this $100 on so much more productive things. It would be nice if we could have our dining plus accounts available to use other places like the bookstore so I can put this money to good use, seeing as how books are so expensive to begin with.
