LETTER: BSU should set up system to ensure required courses

Dear Editor,

I am majoring in nursing and I will not be able to apply for nursing college as soon as I had planned. The reason being that I couldn't get into the important classes I needed to take this semester because they were all full. I understand that the rule is that upperclassmen get priority, but I thought that I was past that method of struggling to get into classes when I graduated high school. The University's goal should be to ensure that students receive the education they desire by being able to give them the classes they sign up for instead of having to "request" them and hope they get lucky. At another Indiana University, they pre-enroll you in your classes that pertain to your major and you just choose your electives so you are guaranteed to stay on track for your major. Of course, if you are undecided, then this wouldn't be such a big deal. If Ball State could spend their money on starting up a program such as this instead of making the students try to fight their way into classes, then maybe graduation rates would be higher because we wouldn't run out of money so fast or just lose hope. I know that I am not the only student who is upset by this, and I think we need to do something about it. How about instead of us campaigning for better toilet paper and more convenient ATM machine locations, we fight for something that really matters: our education and our future.
