Hold 'em tourney to benefit charity

Junior helps raise money for Head Start with two fund-raisers

A Ball State student and a local business owner are hosting a Texas Hold 'em tournament at the Regency today at 9 p.m. to raise money for a local charity.

Junior Holly Iseler, elementary education major, and Benjamin Ehinger, the owner of B&C Custom Golf and Shanker's Golf Outing and Event Planning, started planning the tournament during mid-February, Iseler said.

"Holly came to me with an idea she had," Ehinger said. "I came up with four or five ideas I had, and this was the one that we chose."

The tournament has a $50 buy-in fee for 5,000 chips. Approximately 100 people preregistered for the event, but walk-ins are welcome to attend, Iseler said,

He hopes to collect about $2,000 at the poker tournament, Ehinger said.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top six players, Iseler said. The amount of money is based on the player turnout, but the first-place winner will also receive a set of custom golf clubs.

"We're having small fund-raisers to get a basis to help fund a larger event in June," Iseler said.

Iseler and Ehinger said they will donate all proceeds from the poker tournament and another event on April 8 to a fund for a golf outing and formal dinner and silent auction on June 18.

The proceeds from the events on June 18 will help Head Start, a federally funded preschool program for limited income families and disabled children, Iseler said.

"I really love the program," Iseler said. "It helps to get the kids a head start in life."

Iseler started volunteering at Head Start in Spring 2004 and is now substituting there.

"I really love kids," she said. "The smaller events are our own initiatives to help out Head Start."

Muncie Community Schools provides the building for Head Start. Iseler said Head Start was asked to find a new location because Muncie Community Schools needed the building.

Mark Burkhart, an associate superintendent of the Muncie Community Schools, said that they hope to continue their partnership with Head Start.
