Group seeks healthy options

GAMMA not anti-drinking, but concerned with risks involved

As much as students would like to deny it, Ball State, just like any other campus, has problems concerning the abuse of alcohol. A new club called GAMMA, or Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol, is trying to get the word out on campus about making responsible drinking decisions. "We need to step up our alcohol awareness on this campus," Sarah Aldridge, junior and founder of GAMMA said.

"GAMMA is not an anti-drinking club," Aldridge said. "It's about learning the facts, knowing your limits, and understanding all the risks that are involved with drinking, such as date rape or alcohol poisoning. We want to show students that they don't need to drink to have fun."

The club is open to any greek-affiliated person on campus who has a sincere interest in making a positive change in our college community. GAMMA has recently elected officers, and they are now planning future events for the fall. They meet every other Monday in SC 305 at 7 p.m. "GAMMA is a good and easy way to get involved on campus," Aldridge said. "All the club members work together toward the common goal of keeping our fraternity brothers and sorority sisters safe."

"Any speaker or teacher can stand in front of a group of students and preach about alcohol education," Aldridge said. "But it makes a bigger impact on students when a group of their fraternity brothers and sorority sisters take a stand in an attempt to make a difference."
