Fund-raiser to help scholarships

AStudent foundation sponsors Easter Egg Bingo event

The Ball State University Student Foundation had its final fund-raiser of the academic year on Tuesday at the Alumni Center. Easter Egg Bingo, back for the second year, drew a large crowd of students, BSU employees and Muncie residents.

"It's definitely better this year," said sophomore Lisa Gerstner, president of the student foundation. "Last year, it all happened at the last minute, but this year, we had a lot more time."

The foundation wanted to raise between $2,500 and $3,500 at the event, Carol Kosisko, assistant to the vice president of university advancement, said. The exact amount collected was not available Tuesday.

The money raised from Tuesday's fund-raiser will go toward student scholarships.

Other fund-raisers included Christmas ornament sales, Miss Ball State Pageant, chili tailgate and football T-shirt sales.

The foundation will meet in a few weeks to decide how much of the year's total raised revenue to give to Ball State University, Gertsner said. Ball State then decides how to spend the money.

Gerstner said the bingo fund-raiser was a success because of additional advertising on local radio, newspapers and e-mail to BSU staff and faculty. Members of the foundation also posted flyers in areas around Muncie, in grocery stores and laundromats, Kosisko said.

Winners of the Easter Egg Bingo won baskets filled with various types of prizes, each with a theme. For example, the "berry basket" contained a jar of strawberry jam along with a berry-printed towel and some berry candy.

BSU employee Sunny Reed, who was the night's first bingo winner, walked away with the "tissue basket," a basket filled with a leopard-printed tissue.

"This is the first time I've ever won," she said, with a laugh. "I always have to buy my baskets."

Tracy Curtis, BSU employee, also won a basket later in the night, making her another first-time winner.

"You can tell when someone's about to win," she said. "You can feel the tension."
