WOMEN'S BASETBALL BSU takes one step at a time

First of last four games is saturday as struggling Akron

Coming off of its bye week, the women's basketball team sits in fourth place in the Mid-American Conference west division with four games remaining in its season.

"What we should think of is just the next four games; no matter who it is we play, no matter what the scenario, no matter if we're on the road or at home," head coach Tracy Roller said.

The first of the four games comes Saturday when the team travels to Akron to face a struggling team.

Ball State has had two full days off, as well as a partial day in which they watched film and did shooting drills. Thursday was the team's first full practice of the week, and Roller said the rest has been good for her team that had lost two straight games.

"You can tell from two straight games of uncharacteristic shooting nights that we needed it," Roller said. "I thought we looked well rested and energized."

The Zips have won just three games so far this season. After starting the season with 15 losses, Akron won three out of four games at the end of January but has since lost five games.

Ball State meanwhile will try to get its 12th win overall and eighth in the conference.

"They're going to play just as hard as we are, maybe even harder because they need it more then we do," Roller said.

Akron does not have a player who averages in double figures. Its leading scorer, Jessie Crooks, averages 9.5 points per game but has scored 10.3 in the conference season. The Zips score just 54. 7 points per game while giving up 67.8.

Besides one play, Roller said Ball State will have seen most everything the Zips run offensively.

"They have really good offensive sets, but they're all things that we've done before except for that," she said.

Roller said there's no reason her team can't win out and then hope for some help that could give them a bye for the MAC Tournament in March.

"The next four games are just the most important part of our season right now, and Akron just happens to be the next team," she said.
