TRACK Cards to compete in MAC Championships

The stretch run in the indoor track season reaches a climax this weekend when Ball State travels to Central Michigan for the Mid-American Conference Championships. Sue Parks' team has had an excellent showing this season, with strong performances turned in by junior Jill Scully, freshmen Yvonne Ferguson, Amber Williams and Christina Whitt and the 4x400 relay team.

Last week, the Cards got their final tune-up for the MAC championships when they hosted Miami and Western Michigan in the Ball State Triangular. They finished second behind Western by six points. The meet was a high mark for sophomore Amanda Barnhart, who won the long jump with a mark of 20 feet, 1 inch. That leap made Barnhart a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships, held in Fayetteville, Ark., in two weeks.

Sophomore Amanda Ponsot, who was second in the mile last weekend, and Barnhart both will have their hands full. Akron All-American Beata Rudzinksa is a defending conference in the 800-meter run and the mile. Lela Nelson of Eastern Michigan is a returning champion in the long jump.
