TRACK AND FIELD BSU races Miami, Western Michigan

Only a few weeks remain in the indoor track season, and the Ball State team is looking to improve before next week's MAC Championships by hosting MAC rivals Miami and Western Michigan. It will be the second home meet this season for the Cards.

Last week, Sue Parks and the Cardinals finished ninth at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge at Penn State. As a team, they recorded 12 personal bests. Among these was senior Ashley Gillies, who was third in the high jump.

The strengths of the team "are pretty all over the board," assistant coach Todd Lane said. "The distance and the sprints are doing well and the throwing groups are ready for a big weekend. Overall, this team's strengths are very distributed."

One group of contributors this season has been the freshmen class, including Yvonne Ferguson. She was named MAC Women's Athlete of the Week earlier this season and has placed well in every meet. Joining her with strong results have been fellow freshmen Amber Williams and Christina Whitt.

"Anytime you get freshmen, they bring a new energy," Lane said. "Williams and Whitt are both talented individuals and will only get better with seasoning. But also Katie Robbins had done things in meets that have inspired people. Katie Kaylor continues to get better and better. And Vonnie Ferguson is so energetic and bubbly. They all inspire people and bring a different talent."
