TENNIS Men, women to play at home this weekend

Both the men's and women's tennis teams will play at home over this weekend as Ball State continues their out of conference schedule.

The men (2-3), who have dropped three straight contests to Big 10 schools, play host Wisconsin on Sunday. The Cardinals have dropped to No. 5 Illinois 6-1, No. 39 Northwestern 4-3 and No. 49 Michigan 6-1. The Cardinals have performed well against ranked singles and doubles opponents, which led to Matt Baccarani being named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week twice with a third-set loss to Illinois' Ryler DeHeart, who is ranked No. 2 in the nation. The No. 56 doubles tandum of Baccarni and Patrick Thompson has tabbed four wins and no losses despite the torrid schedule the teams have faced so far.

The Cardinals defeated Wisconsin 4-3 last year, in what was debatably their best win of the season, and Baccarani and Thompson earned their first win against a ranked opponent.

The women (4-1) will face Cincinnati at 3 p.m. today and then will travel to Michigan State on Sunday. The women have a young team, with only two upper classmen and three letterwinners on the entire team.

The Cardinals opened their season with a loss to No. 29 Indiana and then tallied four wins against Indiana State, Wright State, IPFW and Dayton.

Freshman Stephanie Farrar has led the way for the Cardinals, playing in the top doubles position and going undefeated in singles in the season so far.
