Students bid on dates, help charity

Group to donate proceeds to local Habitat for Humanity

A group of architecture students are putting themselves on the auction block to raise money for the local chapter of Habit for Humanity.

The date auction, sponsored by the Ball State American Institute of Architecture Students, begins at 5 p.m. today in Architecture Building 100. The auction does not include a cover charge, but the seating is limited.

Mike Schulte, president of AIAS, said the organization hopes for a high turn out like in the previous four years with a crowd of more than 200 people.

The student group does not have a fund-raising target, but it hopes to collect up to $400, Schulte said.

Men and women alike can make a bid with one of 30 dates up for auction. A new feature to the auction this year is a free dinner gift certificate with the date and possibly tickets to the theater that were donated by local businesses.

Schulte said participants in the auction dress up or do little acts while they go across the stage to help the build up the bidding.

Freshman Ryan Beemsterboer said he looks forward to the date auction because it is a good opportunity for students to benefit the community and the school.

The student group hopes to build a Habitat for Humanity house, Schulte said.

However, the dates auction isn't just about helping out the community, it's also about opening up to the campus to let others know about the architecture program.

"We're just trying to get a little better known on campus," Schulte said. "We're trying to let people know who we are and what we're about."

Freshman Jennifer Clarke said it's a great way to have fun while helping out the school.

"If the AIAS can benefit from it," Clarke said, "it's all the more worth while. People get dates, free food and the AIAS benefits. What could be better?"
