Quiz team heads to IUPUI

Students advance to regional competition today, Saturday

Four students representing Ball State University will compete in the Regional College Bowl today and Saturday at IUPUI.

The Ball State Democrat's team includes junior Nicole Schneider, senior Kevin Bezy, freshman Desiree Howell, sophomore Jacob Clere and junior Steven Nawara as team captain.

The team won the Ball State College Bowl, which is described as the "varsity sport of the mind," in January. The university participated in the College Bowl competition after a 16-year break from the program.

Now, in its 28th year, College Bowl is a campus program that has quickly become a popular tradition on college campuses across the nation. Ball State was one of nearly 300 colleges to participate in the event this year. The university had 24 teams with a total of 96 students take part in the event.

"I thought it was a lot of fun," Nawara said. "I was on my high school's scholastic bowl team and this was pretty comparable. Being on stage during the competition is surprisingly intense, but our team handled the pressure nicely. Hopefully, we will be successful in Indianapolis, too."

Nawara said that his team will prepare for the regional competition the same way that they did for the first tournament.

"Before the tournament, all we did was play one game of Trivial Pursuit," he said. "Since that seemed to work out all right for us, we will probably do the same for this weekend. It is kind of hard to practice because such a wide range of questions can be asked. At the tournament here at Ball State, the questions ranged from topics like Puff Daddy to classic literature."

Because of the turnout of this year's College Bowl competition, Ball State's Student Life and Campus Programs plans to make the College Bowl an annual event on campus.

If the students win the regional competition, they will advance to the National College Bowl tournament April 22-24 at the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash., according to the College Bowl Web site.

At the national competition, 15 university teams and one wild card team, selected by random from the second place regional teams, will compete in April.
