OUR VIEW: Spirit of competition

AT ISSUE: BSU students look forward to weekend of diverse competition and battle`

Saturday will present a couple reasons to cheer for fellow Cardinals as they represent the university in competitions this weekend. In addition to the traditional sports battles taking placing here and abroad, a handful of BSU students will face off against other schools in the Regional College Bowl on Saturday.

In January, Ball State brought back to life its College Bowl program after a 16-year break. Twenty-four teams consisting of 96 students took part in competition that weekend. This weekend, the Ball State Democrat's team, will head to IUPUI to compete in the regional match.

Should they rise to the top, the team could advance to the National College Bowl tournament at the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash. in April.

It's good to know that students are still interested in competing in these respected academic forms. Too often is school pride placed purely upon its athletic talent, leaving the brains of the institution drowned out by the brawn. Sports are an important part of university spirit, despite what it may seem here at Ball State.

This is not to discount the athletes. Certainly Ball State's teams excel in both brains and brawn.

This weekend, they'll be showing it off, too.

Many of the school's athletes will hit the road, including baseball, men's volleyball, gymnastics and women's basketball. Back here in Muncie, Cardinal track and the men's tennis team will welcome visitors.

Saturday afternoon, students can join the crowd in "The Nest" as Ball State's men's basketball team takes on Drexel at Worthen Arena as part of a nationally-televised "Bracket Buster" game on ESPN Plus. Although the match-up is on limited cable access, it is still an important game for the team. It's also a chance for the university to show off its facilities to a national crowd while showcasing the number of fans which can fill it's stands with red and white.

With a College Bowl team looking for national competition admission, a men's basketball team looking for a break at the big dance and numerous other sports teams in competition, it's a good weekend to cheer on Ball State.

Academically and physically.
