MEN'S BASKETBALL Cardinals suffer fifth straight loss

Terrance Chapman proves worth on court despite loss

Following Saturday's 74-70 loss to Drexel, Ball State head coach Tim Buckley said his team failed to play and compete for 40 minutes, allowing Drexel to come back. However, Buckley added that senior forward Terrance Chapman was the only Cardinal to play for 40 minutes.

Chapman scored a team-high 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds in Saturday's loss. He was instrumental in keeping the game close down the stretch when Drexel took the lead. His six free throws helped keep the Cards in striking distance. Chapman says he felt he could get near the basket every time.

"I felt I could use my quickness to get around those guys and I was just attacking and attacking," Chapman said. "I was just making baskets."

Signs of a shoulder injury, which he suffered a month ago at Western Michigan, were not apparent Saturday. Chapman did not wear a brace on his left shoulder.

"I felt I was gonna let everything hang and I just felt really good today and my play showed it a little bit," Chapman said.

The Cards led the majority of the game, including by as many as 14 points in the first half, before Drexel cut it to nine heading to halftime. The Cards watched as Drexel chipped away the lead in the second half before going ahead in the final minutes. Chapman says the lack of urgency was what led Drexel back in the game.

"We come out too relax and we let down on the defensive end," Chapman said. "It seems to be a trend in every game we're up."

After the game, Ball State players and coaches spoke with each other in the locker room for 55 minutes before addressing the media. While Buckley says the meeting was private, Chapman summarized the team's post-game talk.

"We just went over some things that we needed to start getting done," Chapman said. "Guys need to decide what they've got to do and need to play hard for 40 minutes."
