LETTER: Bush should have mad his platform 'Live in the now'

Dear Editor,

In the February 7 edition of the Daily News, three separate articles detailed President Bush's proposals regarding our nation's future financial, ecological and educational security. These articles have convinced me that Bush's platform should have been "Live in the Now!"

I would personally like to congratulate President Bush on his decisive vision for the present. Planning for the well-being of our future generations is a messy, time-consuming thing. Isn't it easier to simply invest in today, leave the worrying to our kids and our kids' kids? Kudos to you, George Bush, for embracing this principle and leading the nation by example!

Privatize Social Security? Sure! Let's roll our collective dice and risk the financial future of those who need it most! Answer the pressing need for wiser energy sources by drilling the remaining sliver of virginal Alaskan wilderness? No problem -- who ever really visits Alaska anyway? Make long-reaching cuts to financial aid that could make or break people's chances of getting into college? All covered Pell Grants are proposed to be on the rise, by $100 a year. The first year's Pell Grant increase alone breaks down to about one-seventh of my yearly textbook requirements, about 28 caramel frappacinos or my monthly late fees from Blockbuster (pre-"no late fees" days).

As a mother of two, I personally have no interest or investment in financial or ecological future of my children's world. Yeah, none at all. As a student, I have no interest in the security of future financial assistance. Yeah, none at all. So keep taking the future away from our nation, George. The way you're going, there won't be one anyway.

Kerry Pritchard, mother of two, Ball State student.
