LETTER: Ball State students win state residence hall conference

Dear Editor,

I would like to recognize the Ball State University campus for a few honors it received at the Indiana Residence Hall Organization (IRHO) Conference this past weekend, Feb. 11 and 12. The conference was in Bloomington on the Indiana University campus and 14 colleges and universities across the state were in attendance.

Ball State University submitted bids in four categories and won all four. The first was for IRHO Director, and MacKenzie Herrell received that honor. Secondly, Adviser of the Year was awarded to Stacy Neils, assistant director of Housing and Residence Life for Student Development. Next, the Program of the Year award was presented to Mud Volleyball 17. And finally, Ball State University was greatly honored with the School of the Year award, surpassing three other schools' bids. These are prestigious honors that have set Ball State University apart from any other university or college in the state of Indiana.

In addition to these tributes, two Ball State students, Katie Wiese and James Tobin, were inducted into IRHO Alumni Association for their dedication to Housing and Residence Life during their undergraduate years. Valerie Phillips won the Aspiring Student Scholarship for her commitment thus far to Housing and Residence Life. She will receive a trip to the National Association of College and University Residence Halls Conference that will be held in Syracuse, New York during the last week of May.

About one-third of Ball State's student population lives in on-campus housing, but these awards affect every student here at Ball State. As student leaders, we have continuously proven that we can have a strong effect on the college experience. These honors show that hard work will not go unnoticed, which is a far cry from being the "epitome of apathy," I must say.
