GYMNASTICS BSU loses home match to N0. 14 Central Michigan

Cardinals remain consistent with score from season

The gymnastics team suffered another defeat on the season during Friday's home match against No. 14 Central Michigan. Ball State scored a 191.825, losing to the Chippewas score of 195.225.

Ball State drops its record to 3-13 overall, 1-4 in Mid-American Conference play. Central Michigan (10-3) remains on top of the MAC with a 5-0 league record.

The Cardinals score of 191.825 remains consistent with its scores this season. Ball State has scored between a 192.200 and 190.025 in all eight meets this year.

"They're consistent," head coach Mary Roth said. "They still need to bump it up."

The Cards were led by senior Jessica Surridge who finished second on bars (9.775) and fifth on vault (9.700). Surridge finished third in the all-around, tallying a 38.725.

Quiana Williams finished fourth on beam, scoring a 9.800.

Kelli Davis and Kelly Watson finished third on floor with a 9.725. Davis competed in the all-around for the first time in three meets. She finished fourth (37.525) after falling on beam.

Jessica Stevenson finished fifth on floor (9.700) and sixth on beam (9.725).

Central Michigan's Kara Reighard placed first in every event and won the all-around with a total score of 39.450.

Ball State compiled scores of 48.375 on floor, 48.300 on bars, 47.700 on beam and 47.450 on vault.

The low score on vault was the result of not having Jenna Tarkington, Roth said. Tarkington is the defending MAC vault champion and is out for the rest of season with an elbow injury.

"We need to find someone to replace Jenna on vault," Roth said. "It will be hard to replace the defending MAC champion."

The Cards best event was the floor exercise. The lowest score for anyone was a 9.600, which pleased Roth.

"Floor was great," Roth said. "Everybody hit their routines."

BSU has just two meet remaining before the MAC Championship on March 25, including the team's final home meet of the season on Friday.

"We just have to keep plugging away," Roth said.
