Today marks the first day schools can receive letters of intent from football recruits. Ball State's 2004 class, Brady Hoke's first full one as head coach, was rated the best in the MAC by ESPN.com's Tom Lemming.
Last year six true freshman saw action, including starters Wendell Brown (linebacker), Adell Givens (tailback) and Ryan Patrick (cornerback). Also, Cole Stinson started five games at quarterback, and linebacker Byron Miles receiver Dan Dunford were important backups. Givens ran for 930 yards on his way to being named First-Team All-MAC and MAC Freshman of the Year.
Among the areas where Hoke could need immediate help this year are wide receiver and defensive line.
Ball State did lose out on two players who had verbally committed earlier. Linebacker Phillip Brown and defensive end Sam Porter, both high school teammates of Miles at Morgan Park in Chicago, have opted instead for Northern Illinois and Illinois, respectively.
