Event to benefit children's research hospital

Masquerade of Hope starts at 8 p.m. at Student Center

Participates in Up 'til Dawn, a student-led fund-raising program, will celebrate four months of fund raising for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital today through Saturday with the Masquerade of Hope.

"The Masquerade of Hope is to thank participates for raising money and getting the name of the program out," Ashley Vaughn, the executive director of the executive board for Up 'til Dawn, said. "This is the first year it was been completed. We hope the program will grow every year and continue to raise money for children at the hospital."

Activities at the Mardi Gras-themed event will include live music by two bands, hypnotist Dan LaRosa, Hip Hop dance lessons, Code Red and University Singers, Charity Moos, Up 'til Dawn adviser, said. The group plans to make a video for the children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as well.

Patients and representatives from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will attend the masquerade.

The name Up 'til Dawn was created because of the parents who stay up all night with their children at the hospital, Moos said.

In addition to being a celebration, the Masquerade of Hope is to show students how fortunate they are to not have to stay up with a sick child on a regular basis, Vaughn said.

On Saturday morning, the students will announce the total amount of money raised. Afterwards, work to get a new executive board for next year will start, Vaughn said.

Registration for the Masquerade of Hope will begin at 8 p.m. The masquerade will take place in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center ballroom. Participates are required to bring 25 names and addresses to send letters about St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to, Moos said.

Anyone who is interested in becoming involved with Up 'til Dawn next year can e-mail the coordinators at utd@bsu.edu or call (765)285-2621, Vaughn said.
