WOMEN'S TENNIS Ball State wins twice over weekend

Cards out-preform Dayton, IPFW in non-conferance play

Ball State's women's tennis team remained undefeated at home, earning two wins over the weekend and ending a stretch of five games in eight days. The Cardinals (4-1) topped Dayton 6-1 early in the day, then swept IPFW 7-0 to complete the day.

"I'm just glad that we were able to play two matches like that in one day," coach Kathy Bull said. "I think that says a lot about our conditioning and our composure."

The Cardinals started their day against Dayton. In doubles, Jessia Thompson and Katie Owens defeated Allysa Detroy and Kara Metzger 8-6 while Haly Calderwood and Jennifer Pollack handled Kate Mellion and Megan Gray 8-4. Dayton's Erin Kirkland and Courtney McDowell were able to defeat Jenny Batty and Stephanie Farrar at the top spot, but the Cardinals secured the point.

"Things came together, doubles was playing with a little more comfort. I really like their confidence and communication on the court," Bull said.

In singles, Kirkland scored Dayton's only point, defeating Batty 6-4, 6-3. Thompson, Pollack, Calderwood, Farrar and Owens all picked up victories for the Cardinals.

Against IPFW, the Cardinals took care of business, with Batty and Farrar recovering from the earlier loss with an 8-1 win over Ashley Coulson and Jill Carie. Thompson and Owens also had an 8-1 win, while Calderwood and Pollack took a little longer to take the 8-5 victory.

In singles, Batty defeated Coulson 6-0, 6-3, while Thompson defeated Hanna Hager 6-1, 6-1. Calderwood, who was moved up to the No. 3 position for this match, defeated Lisa Bartelheim 6-1, 6-2. Pollack handled Carie 6-1, 6-2, while Farrar remained undefeated in singles play this year with the 6-3, 6-2 win over Beth Miller. Allison Thompson, in her first non-exhibition singles performance as a Cardinal, made an impression, as she didn't drop a single game with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jessica Vervynckt.

The Cardinals are getting some much needed time off before heading back to work Feb. 11 when they host Cincinnati at 3 p.m.

"The next (match) will be that next level of competition up," Bull said.
