Winter storm strikes campus

MicKinley Avenure sees tow accidents near Shafer Tower

The relentless downfall of snow Thursday night did not dampen the spirits of two Ball State students.

Waiting for their ride home, sophomore Melissa Miller looked up at the snow-filled sky and sophomore Dawn Wink tightened the hood to her coat.

However, Wink and Miller are not strangers to snow.

On Tuesday night, the women turned the empty Worthen Arena parking lot into a snow-covered racetrack for sledding by using a car to pull each other around. With the frigid cold and falling snowflakes, conditions were prime for another round of Wink and Miller's sledding speedway.

As the snow continued to fall, Miller and Wink stood in the already __ inch deep snow that was responsible for two minor car accidents earlier in the day near Shafer Bell Tower.

The accidents, which happened at 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. on McKinley Avenue, resulted in no injuries, but one car was towed away.

"Speed is a big factor because road conditions aren't always as good as they appear," Gene Burton, university police chief, said.

Burton stressed the importance for students to pay close attention to speed, to take their time and to keep a bigger braking distance in front of their car than normal.

The National Weather Service issued a snow advisory for Delaware County until midnight tonight because 1 to 3 inches of snow is possible by midnight.

A winter storm watch is in affect for Delaware County from tonight until Saturday evening. Several inches of snow as well as accumulation of ice are possible as a winter storm system moves across central Indiana.

According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning is issued when severe winter weather is possible but not imminent at the time.

Not all Ball State students are used to the winter weather Muncie has experienced lately.

On his way out of the cold and into Scotty's Brewhouse in the Village with his friends, junior Marcus Miller said he used to attend Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis.

"I just transferred here two weeks ago, and you guys are cursed by mother nature up here," Miller said.
