'Vagina Monologues' raising money for Better Way

The award winning play "The Vagina Monologues" is coming to Ball State University for the third straight year in an effort to raise money for A Better Way, Muncie's shelter for female victims of violence. Iota Iota Iota, Ball State's Women's Studies Honor Society, is sponsoring the event.

"The Vagina Monologues" helped inspire V-Day, a global initiative to end violence against women, which will come to Ball State as a part of the production.

"Originally another organization was supposed to hold the event," Ranada Bowie, Iota Iota Iota College Campaign Organizer, said. "But they backed out, and we told the organizers that we would be happy to do it. We are very excited."

Eve Ensler, "The Vagina Monologues" author, created the touring event in response to female victims of abuse she encountered as the play toured. The first V-Day event was held in New York City on Valentine's Day in 1998 and has become an integral part of any performance of "The Vagina Monologues."

This year's V-Day theme, "Vagina Warriors Lead the Way," was inspired by the efforts of V-Day activists for getting the word out about violence against women during the 2004 election year.

According to Susan Celia Swan, V-Day Media and Communications director, V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery. In 2004, over 2000 V-Day benefit events were presented by volunteer activists in the United States and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls. In its first year of incorporation (2001), V-Day was named one of Worth Magazine's "100 Best Charities." In seven years, the V-Day movement has raised over $25 million for various women's charities.

Students will produce and perform in Ball State's presentation of "The Vagina Monologues". Auditions will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center in Cardinal Hall C; those auditioning are required to prepare the monologue of their choice.

"The Vagina Monologues" will be performed at Emens Auditorium at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 and 18, and 4 p.m. Feb. 20. Tickets for the performance will be $5 with proceeds benefiting A Better Way.
