After opening up the spring season with 12 first-place finishes during the Ball State Open last week, the Ball State women's track team will head out on the road for the first time. They are involved in the Red Simmons Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan.
The star of Sue Parks' team last week was freshman Yvonne Ferguson. The sprinter from Pittsburgh won the 300 meter race with a time of 39.61 seconds. This beat both the school record (40.9) and the Field and Sports Building record (41.2) by more than a full second. She was also named the Mid-American Conference Woman Athlete of the Week.
Also helping the team out with great runs were juniors Jill Scully and Crystal Winfrey, who won the 1500 and 600 respectively. In both races, the second and third-place finishers also happened to be Cardinals (sophomore Amanda Ponsot and senior Sarah Huddleston in the 500; sophomores Alex Marshall and Amanda Brewer in the 600). Both performed like the team leaders that Parks is expecting them to be.
The Cards also got event wins from sophomore Christina Poulson (55 meters), Ponsot (800 meters), sophomore Rose Lehe (3000 meters), freshman Amber Williams (55 meter hurdles), the 4x400 relay team, junior Kristina Hervey (high jump), sophomore Amanda Barnhart (long jump) and sophomore Terri Abraham (triple jump).
