TRACK Freshman breaks record at Ball State Open

Ferguson's victory in 300 one of 12 firsts for Cardinals

Yvonne Ferguson broke the 300-meter school and Field Sports Building record Saturday as she took one of 12 first-place finishes for the Ball State women's track team at the Ball State Open.

Ferguson won the 300 with a time of 39.61. The previous school record had been held by Melinda Barfield since 1980 with a time of 40.90. Before that, Michaela Kinnaird (41.20) had held the track record since 1987.

Christina Whitt and Brigdett Coleman followed Ferguson to take the top three spots in that event.

The Cardinals dominated in several events, like it did the 300. Jill Scully won the one-mile race and was joined by Amanda Ponsot and Sarah Huddleson to sweep the top three. Crystal Winfrey took the 600 and was joined by Alex Marshall and Amanda Brewer to do the same. In all, the Cardinals won the top three placings in seven events.

Terri Abraham contributed with a win in the triple jump and a second place in the long jump. Christina Poulson (55 meters), Ponsot (800), Amber Williams (55-meter hurdles), Rose Lehe (3000), Kristina Hervey (high jump) and Amanda Barnhart (long jump) added wins in their respective events.

Junior Jennifer McCoy finished with a second place in the 55-meters, third in the shot put and fourth in the high jump. Also adding second place finishes were Cara Collins (weight throw) and Karmen Mabry (shot put).

The relay teams also had a strong showing as the 4x400 teams finished first, second and fourth, respectively.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at the 25th annual Red Simmons Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
