The University Senate canceled its first meeting of 2005 because of a lack of agenda items, Marilyn Buck, chairwoman of Senate, said.
"We only had one item on the business agenda, and it was a proposal to recommend that the university considers adding bike paths," Buck said.
Sen. Steve Geraci, student representative on the agenda committee, said there are topics and pieces of legislation that are still in finishing stages.
"A lot of councils and committees didn't meet in December for whatever reason, and there are a lot of things in the system right now," Geraci said. "The Senate can't act on the legislation without the smaller units."
One such item is a proposal to do away with Saturday finals, Geraci said.
"We've been waiting on action from the Academic Policies Council before we decide on that piece of legislation," Geraci said.
Stanley Keil, chairman of the Academic Policies Council, said his committee didn't meet in December because it had nothing to discuss.
"We're waiting for the calendar committee," Keil said. "We can't make any decisions about Saturday finals until they take action."
Keil said Saturday finals could be a non-issue by the time it reaches his committee.
"I can't say which way it's going to go," Keil said. "It depends on how the calendar and undergraduate education committees decide to vote on the issue."
Ben Tietz, Student Government Association president and member of the Senate's governance committee, said he was disappointed when he heard about the cancellation.
"It's a shame the University Senate has to cancel meetings when some of the legislation has been sitting there for so long," Tietz said.
February's meeting will probably be lengthy, as there are at least three items already planned for the agenda next month, Geraci said. One possible issue is a re-evaluation of summer tuition, Keil said.
The University Senate meets once a month. The next meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Art and Journalism Building.
