REVIEW: Ani DiFranco: "Knuckled Down"

After making a switch from her traditional use of horn accompaniment to more string, Ani DiFranco's latest album "Knuckled Down" flows with an organic sound and poetic, short stories. As in other works, she creates a lyrical biography in the different tracks throughout the album. Unlike most of her previous albums, "Knuckled Down" strips down her sound and more closely resembles DiFranco's live solo acoustic performances and recordings.

Since 1990, DiFranco has released a new album each year, and for the first time in her career, she teams up with singer and songwriter Joe Henry to co-produce the album. More than a half a dozen musicians including Righteous Babe Records (DiFranco's own recording lable) artist Andrew Bird (violin, glockenspiel, whistling), former band member Julie Wolf (melodica) and current stage partner Todd Sickafoose (on bass) join DiFranco throughout the album. The additional smooth string accompaniments compliment DiFranco's energetic, rough-and-ready guitar sound.

Apart from avid DiFranco fans, this would be a good album for Tori Amos or Melissa Ferrick listeners. And anyone looking for a indie/folk, laid back sound should definitely look into buying this album.
