Alex Swinney died at 2:45 a.m. Friday in his apartment on Chadam Lane.
Swinney was a first-year graduate student from Columbus, Ind., working toward a master's degree in computer science. He was a Ball State undergraduate student in computer science, and he graduated in May 2004.
"I'm very sad and shocked that this happened; this was very untimely and tragic," Jay Bagga, chairperson for the department of computer science, said. Bagga said he was shocked when he found out about Swinney's death in an e-mail Friday. Swinney was a student in many of Bagga's classes during the past few years. Bagga had Swinney in class the day before his death, he said.
"He was a great student and he did very well in his classes," Bagga said.
Swinney is survived by his parents, Mike and Mary Swinney.
