MEN'S BASKETBALL Chapman ditches harness leads team

Shoulder was a distraction in first half coach says

With just two points on 1-of-7 shooting in 16 minutes in the first half of Saturday's game against Northern Illinois, it was apparent that Terrance Chapman was struggling with the shoulder harness he was wearing for the sprained left shoulder he suffered last weekend against Western Michigan.

After apologizing to his teammates at halftime for his play on Saturday, Chapman took the harness off and started the second half with a thunderous dunk that energized the crowd and his teammates at the 17:56 mark. The play pulled the Cardinals to within four, and the harness would stay off the remainder of the half.

He also gave the Cardinals the go-ahead layup.

"He told us at halftime he didn't play like he wanted to. He told us he was going to bring it in the second half, and he did," Dennis Trammell said.

Coach Tim Buckley said he thought the harness was in the back of Chapman's head in the first half.

"I don't think he felt he was able to get going offensively," Buckley said. In the second half, coming out and focusing on the defensive end and making the plays to start the half that he did and the team did turned the balance of the game."

Chapman finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, with half of his rebounds coming on the offensive end. His final rebound came in the final seconds to secure a double-double, his fifth of the season. Although he shot just 4-of-14 for the game, his return to the lineup was a noticeable one after sitting out last Tuesday's game at Akron.

"Terrance has the ability to impact games," Buckley said. "It's just the way he carries himself, the way he moves, his athleticism. He's very, very intelligent."

Along with his double-double, Chapman added three assists and two steals.

"He knows what you're supposed to do and when you're supposed to do it. There aren't many guys out there like that," Buckley said. "I thought he played with tremendous pride and passion in the second half."
