LETTER: Alumna thanks McKonkey for making difference

Dear Editor,

Today, the city of Muncie and the university community will have to say goodbye to one of the most committed and valuable assets they've known for more than 16 years.

Dr. Douglas McConkey made a difference to many students during his years of service to Ball State University. From his supportive presence at academic and athletic events to his open-door, receptive and responsive administrative style, to his unending encouragement for students to make the most of their education, McConkey's professional talents will be missed.

His "student centered" approach to his position was always noticed. Students were accepted and valued for who they were -- not merely more bodies toward meeting an enrollment quota. His encouraging speeches during orientation allowed students to envision themselves at Spring Commencement on the Arts Terrace and helped to open their eyes and kindle their enthusiasm to all of the things they would experience along the way. Standing at Beneficence, McConkey assured many parents their students would be valued, making the empty nest a little bit easier to bear. Each fall, he re-dedicated the Student Affairs staff to their responsibilities, re-enforcing the potential each person had to change lives.

As a young professional in higher education administration, McConkey took special care to make sure that new colleagues (such as myself) were mentored, encouraged in their own professional development and valued for their interactions with students. So many times in higher education, with elevated rank comes exaggerated distance from the people or issues that lead to vocational interest in that profession: in my case, students. McConkey's commitment to students has never diminished. As always, he is recognized professionally across the country for the talents he possesses.

In recent years, I have watched and admired McConkey's ability to re-define the expectations of an incoming Ball State student, challenge the university community to create opportunities for its development during their tenure, listen, research and strategize during times of difficulty for students and employees -- and forge ahead to capitalize on the strengths of the academic community, making Ball State "the choice" of many current and future students, not simply "a choice."

It is because of people like Dr. and Mrs. McConkey that my experiences as both a former Ball State University student and student affairs professional remain some of my most positive to date. Due largely in part to their dedication, friendship, unending support and guidance, I am able to personally identify with the jingle that accompanies much of Ball State's media.

Thank you, Dr. and Mrs. McConkey -- what a difference you've made in my life.

Ellen Payne
