Hyman takes on interim VP position

McConkey to step down Friday; farewell party set for Thursday

Ball State University dean of students Randy Hyman learned Monday that he will fill the role as interim vice president for student affairs when Doug McConkey steps down on Friday.

President Jo Ann Gora asked McConkey to resign in December 2004 after eliminating his position as vice president of student affairs to create a vice president of marketing communications and enrollment management position.

In addition to the responsibilities of his new position, Hyman said he will still be responsible for his duties as dean of students and associate vice president for student services.

Hyman will act as the interim vice president until a candidate is selected for the position of vice president for marketing, communications and enrollment management, Gora said in an e-mail to students and faculty on Tuesday.

"As interim vice president, Randy will immediately join my cabinet," Gora said. "Once the permanent leader for the Division of Student Affairs is named, that person will be a standing member of the cabinet with the same full voice in administrative decisions as other members."

The interim position is intended to maintain the current structure and will not be in charge of creating any changes or programs, Heather Shupp, executive director of university communications, said.

"The ad for the new position was listed at the beginning of January, and applications are still coming in," Shuppe said. "The search committee has already met and plans to meet again this Friday. They've projected that they'll be done reviewing applications by mid to late February."

Candidates will be invited to the university in late February or early March for an open forum, and students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend, Shupp said.

"None of us really know what the new leadership position will bring," Shuppe said. "The president is looking for someone with experience in the areas of both enrollment management and marketing so that those functions will work more seamlessly together. President Gora has said that she has no intention to diminish the division of student affairs; she wants to move enrollment management and marketing in a new direction."

A search committee will begin reviewing applications for the new position in February, and candidates will be invited to the university in late February or early March, Gora said.

Faculty and staff will honor McConkey at a farewell reception from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Ball State Alumni Center.
