SWIMMING: BSU travels to Akron for Zippy Invitational

The Ball State men's and women's swim teams travel to Akron this weekend for the Zippy Invitational. Preliminaries for the three-day event begin today at 11 a.m.

In addition to Ball State, Buffalo, Clarion, Duquesne, Hiram, Ohio and Xavier will also send men's and women's teams. Illinois State and Tulane are sending women's squads, while the St. Bonaventure men will also compete.

The women's team faced Akron in a dual meet last month at home, with the Cardinals winning 185.5-114.5. Both Ball State teams won their respective meets at their own Doug Coers Invitational two weeks ago.

Last week, Kurtis Leers was named MAC Men's Swimmer of the Week for his performance at the Coers Invite. Leer won the 50, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events and also took part in all three BSU relay wins. It was the third time in his career Leer was named swimmer of the week.

Michelle Braden led the women's team at that meet by winning the 100 and 200 individual medley races.
