The Edmund F. and Virginia B. Ball Distinguished Chair in Telecommunications will discuss his view on the possible changes in Muncie media in the next 10 years today in his presentation "Muncie Media in the Year 2014: Predicting a Day in Your Life."
Barry Umansky's Muncie media presentation is his annual public speech as an endowed chair.
"He will be predicting the future of Muncie media," Nancy Carlson, chair of the Department of Telecommunications, said. "He will be discussing how he thinks broadcast systems will change, ownership, the way media does media and technology."
Umansky will discuss the new competitions in media, such as XM Radio and digital television, Carlson said.
Umansky's presentation will start at 7:30 p.m. today in room 225 in Bracken Library. There will be an informal reception following the presentation. Both the presentation and reception are free and open to the public.
"He is a former Federal Communications Commission lawyer," Carlson said. "He has lots of opinions on the current conservative FCC."
Before coming to Ball State in 2003, Umansky served as Deputy General Counsel with the National Association of Broadcasters in the Legal and Regulatory Affairs Department.
Umansky edited and co-authored many National Association of Broadcasters publications, including several editions of the NAB Legal Guide to Broadcast Law and Regulation, the NAB Broadcaster's Guide to FCC Radiation Regulation Compliance and the NAB Contests, Lotteries and Casino Gambling Guidebook.
In addition to teaching communications law classes and the senior capstone social responsibilities course, Umansky is currently affiliated with the Washington, D.C. communications law firm of Irwin, Campbell & Tannenwald, P.C.
