OUR VIEW: Internally inferior

AT ISSUE: SGA needs to begin work on campus-related legislating, not just self-improving bills, amendments

Over the last few weeks, we have watched Student Government Association members struggle with legislation that would allow student organizations more seats within the caucus.

Wednesday, SGA overturned a presidential veto, finally allowing the four seats to be added to the association.

All things considered, it was mere housekeeping.

Sure, internal issues pop-up here and there that require the full, undivided attention of SGA. It is an accepted fact that with time come changes. We cannot criticize members working out the nitty-gritty details, so long as it is beneficial to the organization, or more importantly the campus.

That is to say, we support their efforts, so long as the means justify the ends.

In this case, it was an effort for SGA to encourage more involvement within the organization itself. These changes may be great for the internal running of SGA, but has it really required the better half of a semester to "accomplish" a handful of interally focused legislation pieces such as this one?

These minor changes in internal structure are anything but tangible evidence of SGA's progress this year, and because of that, we see a problem.

The association has now spent the bulk of its first semester proposing legislation and working to "clean house." Meanwhile, Ball State has yet to see any real (personal) results from our elected senators and representatives.

At the very least, it would at least be nice to see more than a select group of SGA members getting and staying involved.

Whether it be more bills and resolutions introduced by senators other that the usual speakers, or approving legislation not so far out of SGA's jurisdiction: there are plenty of options remaining for SGA members to show us why we elected them to office.

Housekeeping time is now over.

SGA: It is time to get down to business.
