WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Former Cardinal dies in crash

A former women's basketball player was killed in a car accident in Randolph County on Sunday.

Amy Fuller played two seasons with the Cardinals after transferring from Vincennes University, where she averaged 16.7 points, 11 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.9 blocks and 1.9 steals during her sophomore season.

Current head coach Tracy Roller helped recruit Fuller to Ball State in 2000. Roller was an assistant to Brenda Oldfield during Fuller's junior year and then head coach during her senior season.

Fuller was the first married player that Roller had ever coached, but she said it helped the team.

"She was like the mom (to the players), because she was married and more mature," Roller said.

Her junior season the 6-foot-3 Fuller averaged just 4.9 points per game, but she turned that around her senior season, averaging 8.4 points and 6.6 rebounds while starting 29 of 32 games. The Cardinals went 24-8 that season (2001-02), won the Mid-American Conference West Division, lost in the finals of the MAC Tournament and advanced to the second round of the WNIT.

"Her first year under Brenda she struggled and didn't play as much and then really worked her tail off and her senior year started almost every game," Roller said.

Fuller was born in Muncie and graduated from nearby Union High School. She is survived by husband, Ric, and their 1-year old son.
