SWIMMING Both BSU teams win home invitational

Four men win two events each; women take two relays

Ball State's first-ever Doug Coers Invitational was successful on both counts this weekend, as the Cardinals won both men's and women's swim meets at Lewellen Pool over the weekend.

The Ball State men compiled 1,101.83 points on the two-day meet, while the women racked up 1,159. Other schools at the meet were Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Marshall, Valparaiso, Baldwin-Wallace and Butler.

Four men won a pair of individual events. Adam Konopka took the 400-yard individual medley (4:13.86) and 200 backstroke (1:57.94). Zach Hall was first in the 100 butterfly (53.38) and 100 back (53.51). Kurtis Leer captured the 200 freestyle (1:43.24) and 100 free (46.85), while Josh Willer took the 100 breaststroke (59.56) and 200 breast (2:12.21).

Also grabbing wins were Jim Lullo in the 1,650 free (16:35.61) and Ryan Bowman in the 200 butterfly (2:00.99). All three relay teams -- 200 medley, 400 free and 800 free -- also took first place.

For the women, both Mary Brinkoetter and Brittany Sayler touched the wall in 2:10.58 to win the 200 backstroke. Other Ball State winners included Michelle Braden in the 400 medley (4:39.36), Sarah Welter in the 100 back (59.66) and Ashley VanOsdol in the 100 free (53.91). The 200 medley relay and 400 free relay teams also took first place.

Sayler and Erin Johnson tied for second in the 100 back. Also finishing as runner-up were Addison Del Rio (400 IM), Johnson in the 100 butterfly, Jenna Arnold (200 free and 200 fly), Karla Bailey (100 breast), Michelle Huang (100 free) and Tara Zimmer (200 breast).

Both the men's and women's teams are at Akron's Zippy Invitational on Dec. 3-5.
