Ball State University students will have the opportunity to discuss what the results of this year's presidential election mean for them during a Brown Bag Discussion at noon today in the Multicultural Center.
"Everybody talks about the election building up to it, but then it happens and people move on," Tim Thompson, graduate assistant at the Multicultural Center, said.
Thompson said the discussion will allow students to voice their opinions regarding the election and learn more about the major issues facing them during the next four years, including college funding, social security, national security and gay rights.
"It will allow them to express their feelings about what's going to happen and become more informed about some of the issues statewide and nationally," he said.
The informal lunch discussion will be facilitated by four Housing and Residence Life multicultural advisors, including junior Justin Floyd, member of the Black Student Association; sophomore Johanna McBride, member of the Asian American Student Association; junior Kat Zakrajsek, member of the Latino Student Union; and sophomore Zac Davis, internal vice president for Spectrum.
Floyd said they approached Derick Virgil, director of the Multicultural Center, a month ago about putting together the discussion because they wanted to keep up with the results of the presidential election at the local level.
"We basically wanted to conduct a follow up to the election process and kind of see what's next," Floyd said. "How will the election results affect our community personally, and were there any surprises concerning our age group not voting?"
Floyd said the discussion will primarily focus on the presidential election, but students will also discuss ways to remain politically active locally. Students can play a strong part in local government and effect changes in the community, Floyd said.
"We're here for four years, and that's long enough to be affected by the election in Muncie," he said.
