LETTER: Kerry may have lost, but his views should not be

Dear Editor:

Sorry about this late essay, but classes take precedence. I read articles saying that I should get over Kerry losing. I should do this for "the good of the nation." It was not for the good of our nation that the current administration won. If anything is done worth supporting, I will.

I will not support institutionalization. We fought hard to give everyone equal rights, and we have a long way to go. My friends and I were lucky. Our parents fought to give us a "normal" life instead of putting us in a hospital. Today, our stories are the norm. I will not support steps backwards.

I will not support privatizing taxes. The taxes that you are paying now are supporting the retired generation. That is how it is supposed to be. The young caring for the old, not trying to save money for their old age at the expense of others.

Did you notice that I said the taxes you pay? That is due to my buddy Bush. In the late '90s, people with disabilities were actually working because of affirmative action. No, affirmative action does not ensure quality. I had a job forced by politics. It was a nightmare because they refused to see ability and change, but other companies may. Affirmative action ensures quantity.

I will support national healthcare. We already have it. You just have to be destitute and disabled, a destitute child, a mother or retired. Yes, government healthcare is not top-of-the-line, but if you are working and insured, don't use it. We punish some people for being able to work.

I will not support more spending on foreign soil than in my own country. I do not support our efforts in Iraq. At least his father had a plan and coalition that insured victory. We have given Iraq chaos and terror at the cost of healthcare, childcare and social services in general.

If you think I am angry, maybe you are right, but mostly I am sad. Sad for my friends who can't afford to be sick. Sad for the mom who works two jobs and can't get by. Sad for my dream of equal employment. Sad for my country. Just sad.
