AASA hosts fashion show

Event to display clothes from eight Asian countries

The Asian American Student Association presents the 2004 Asian Fashion Show at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the Student Center Cardinal Hall. The show caps a week of Asian awareness activities that included speakers and martial arts demonstrations.

"We wanted to [put on a fashion show] because Asian is such a rich culture, and fashion goes along with culture," AASA President Elizabeth Douglass said. "Students will benefit by seeing the different styles of Asian countries, and [by comparing] them to American styles" - and in that way understand both cultures better.

Each of eight models will represent fashion from one Asian country during the show, Douglass said. The show will consist of a mix of traditional and contemporary clothing.

The fashion show will also be accompanied by a series of four dances, one each of traditional Vietnamese, Taiwanese and Indian dance, and one contemporary Asian dance.

The models for the show are members of AASA or other campus Asian groups and friends and family of members, Douglass said. Everyone involved has volunteered their time to make the event possible.

"We've been working on this since September," Douglass said. In preparation, the organizers had to secure a venue, recruit models, practice dances and gather the clothing to be used in the show. All of the clothing used in the show was borrowed from students, friends and family, Douglass said.

"It's one of the biggest events that we sponsor, and it's a fun Saturday night," Douglass said.
