'Shedtown' to take audience through 100 years and 5 generations

Series of 10 short plays portrays a family living near Muncie

The Middletown Arts Project is in the process of casting and producing a series of 10 short plays titled "Shedtown."

Of those auditioning, two were students at Ball State; Maureen Mustard, a junior Magazine Design major, and Theater major Nicole Hansel who is also the Middletown Arts Project's student intern.

The 10 short plays by Madge Dishman, a playwright from Indianapolis, focus on a family living in the Muncie area known as Shedtown and will be performed as one piece for the first time from June 9 -12, 2005.

With the first play beginning in 1906 and the last beginning in 1995, audiences are allowed to follow the family through five generations. This will keep audiences captivated throughout, director Flo Lapin said.

However, Lapin said that for the actors, the appeal is in the craft.

"This would've been a dream for me," Lapin said. "To age with a character... you get to live through the century.

Mustard agrees, having acted as the character Hettie Crabtree in "Jaybirds and Hollyhocks," and Elsie June in "The Letter," each of which are a part of "Shedtown."

Hansel, in her second year acting with the Middletown Arts Project, said she enjoys the material. "I like the idea of it," Hansel said. "You usually walk in at the middle of a character's life."

Dishman's plays have been performed all over the nation, and this is not the first time one has been in Muncie. She is best known for her ensemble of short plays, titled "Wildflowers and Untamed Women," which was published by Encore Publishing Company in 1999.

"[Dishman] is an excellent playwright," Mustard said.

"Shedtown" will be the first play performed in the Middletown Arts Project's new home, the Gold Space, at 107 S. Mulberry Street.

Lapin said there is still some need for production assistance. To contact the Middletown Arts Project call (765) 730-8227.
