OUR VIEW: Keep it strong

AT ISSUE: Increased spirit great for school pride, could be greater for community

As with any other Homecoming week, the last four days havebrought out the best in Cardinal pride and the weekend has yet tobegin. Although Homecoming 2004 may be far from over, it isimportant to take a step back a look at the way the university has(and hopefully will) come together this week and for futureevents.

This year posed an interestingly unique situation for theuniversity: it was a rare chance for its supporters to rebound fromsome troubled times. Students, faculty and staff were given anopportunity to show their willingness to overcome some turbulenceand soar on with their Cardinal pride.

Allow us to be the first to say: when it comes to overcoming, weare off to a great start.

Monday's Homecoming Kick-Off! had a crowd of roughly 700students in attendance. Although the number is meek when comparedto the thousands who attend this school, it can be declared avictory when 700 Ball State students get together for anything, letalone alone a school-sponsored function.

Attendance at events throughout the rest of the week have beenlarge and thus satisfactory, another sign of slightly lessapathetic feelings on behalf of the students.

But, in the midst of all of this excitement, in the flurry ofred and white, we stand silently wondering, "Will it continue?"

We question not just in the sense of school spirit, but spiritin general. Imagine the possibilities that exist for students withthis energy and pride - pride that can extend far beyond thebenefit of BSU or ourselves. We imagine a form of participationthat could greatly benefit many groups and charity events.

We ask this, Ball State: If we can pour all of this time, effort, spirit and dedication into one singular week that benefitsus, what else could be greater served with our dedicationthroughout the year?

"Those" include the hard-working men and women behind campuscharity fund-raisers, auctions, bake sales, concerts, movies and somuch more.

They deserve a helping hand for an event, a few hundred morefilled seats for a concert and a few extra dollars to keep theirorganizations rolling.

But more importantly: they deserve our pride.

Are you willing to give it?
