LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Military news story featured only one viewpoint: theirs

The article initially reports that, since 9/11/01, the number ofArmy recruits has increased, not due to patriotism, but economicreasons. Instead of exploring the potential consequences of havinga purely monetarily-motivated military, or investigating novelsolutions to college costs, the rest of the article primarilypraises the military for its benefits package. Ending with theArmy's Wed site and the line, "It never hurts to get information,"this "news story" loses the label "journalism" and becomesadvertising.

Newspapers generally draw a line that separates news space fromad space so that readers know where information comes from: thenewspaper or the advertiser. When that line blurs, otherwise validjournalism becomes irrelevant since the reader no longer knows whofunds the story.

Back to "Cents." Excluding one sentence mentioning an economicsprofessor, the entire article comes from one viewpoint: themilitary, during a time of war, wanting students to enlist. When anewspaper presents a single opinion as fact, that newspaper losesthe label "journalism" and embodies the definition of "propagandamill."
