Radio show relaunches; BSU president first guest

Gora wants to answer questions relating to university's future

Ball State President Jo Ann Gora will answer calls and emailsfrom students during a live call-in show at 3 p.m. today.

The live show, "Talk of Indiana," will air on Indiana PublicRadio (IPR) station 92.1 FM and WIPB-TV Channel 2.

Gora, who took office on August 9, said she doesn't mind being aguest on the show because she began her professional career on theradio.

"It gives me a great opportunity to hear from both citizens ofIndiana as well as students," she said. "I really hope to talkabout my vision for the university and why I think this universityhas the potential for greatness."

Anthony Hunt, general manager of the IPR office at Ball State,invited Gora to paticipate as the first guest on "Talk of Indiana"to help relaunch the monthly program which allows listeners learnwhat is happening within the community.

Hunt said the show gives Gora a chance to explain the role ofpresident. It also allows the community to get more involved withBall State.

"Ball State is the largest employer in this area, so the thingsthey do and the direction they take have a significant impact onwhat's going on in Muncie," Hunt said.

Hunt said it is likely Gora would be a guest on the show againin the future.

"As she begins to take specific issues in certain directions,then people will have questions and that would be a great time tohave her come back on for discussions," Hunt said.

Larry Riley, journalism instructor, and Christine Bavender ofNewlink Indiana are the show's hosts.

"I envisioned the role of co-host as asking some questions toget everything rolling," Riley said. "I've read two books just forthe occasion and thought up a lot of questions that would begood."

Riley said he intends to focus many of his questions on therelationship between the local community and the school.

Gora acknowledged the fact that this is the first week ofclasses, and she knows students are busy but still encourages themto call in.

"It would be great to have students call in comments, opinionsand thoughts, not just questions," she said. "I want to ensure thatstudents have a world-class education both inside and outside theclassroom."
