Car crashes into apartment building

No one injured in two-car collision close to BSU campus

An accident at the intersection of Main and Franklin streetsleft one car at the front door of a downtown apartment complexaround 4 p.m. on Thursday.

The cars of William Barnhill, a 19-year-old Muncie resident, andLeslie O'Brien, 20, a Ball State junior from Lebanon, collided inthe intersection. Barnhill was driving his Cutlass Cierra travelingnorth on Franklin Street, and O'Brien was driving her Pontiac GrandAm SEwas west on Main Street.

Barnhill's Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra ran into the JudsoBuilding, an apartment complex at 300 Main Street.

Barnhill said he was in the middle of the intersection when hislight turned red. O'Brien said she accelerated when her lightturned green and could not stop in time to avoid Barnhill's car.There were no other passengers in either car.

"After we hit, my car spun around and landed on the sidewalk,"O'Brien said. "I am just glad no one was hurt."

Muncie Police Officer James Lenox was first on the scene, and hesaid they were "all pretty lucky." Barnhill was also cited for nothaving his insurance card with him.

Kim Gunkle, manager of the complex, was showing someone anapartment when she heard the accident. Gunkle said the only damageswere to the building's railing and steps at the Main Streetentrance.

Amanda Goehlert, who is a resident in the building, said she wasat the window upstairs when she heard the crash. She wentdownstairs to open the door and the car was at the front steps.

"When I heard something hit," Goehlert said, "I thought that'sgot to be the building."
