OUR VIEW: Because he said so

AT ISSUE: President Bush refuses to allow three student newspapers to cover his visit

Three Iowa student newspapers had to miss President Bush's visit to Des Moines, Iowa, Thursday after the President said he did not want students at the event.

A reporter from the Chronicle of Des Moines Area Community College said he was contacted by the White House press office and informed of the president's decision, according to the Iowa State Daily.

The story did not specify Bush's reason for the shutout.

Three student newspapers were willing to send staff members to cover the event. All three were denied access.

Bush sent a message to students and young voters with this move. He is telling young voters that he does not need them, or does not want their support.

Even if Bush is confident in the amount of young voters that will vote for him in the upcoming election, shutting out more people will not help.

Bush had the opportunity to reach an audience and an important demographic by having college journalists at the event. He refused to take that chance.

Young voters could play a large role in the outcome of this election. If anything gets people fired up, it is denying them access.

Think about it. Every time someone says "no" to a child, the child wants something more and wants an explanation why he or she cannot have it.

Bush might be able to shut students out of press conferences, but he cannot shut them out of the voting booths. It is time that young Americans show President Bush how important their votes can be.
