LETTER: Administration is using campaign as scapegoat

Dear Editor,

The mission statement for the Office of the Dean of Students states that it is there to "support student learning and growth by encouraging social and personal accountability and responsible decision making." Wow, that is quite a mouthful. So if students aren't sure what this means, then surely they can just look to the example set by Ball State's current administration to get an idea. Can they?

The hypocrisy of the administration here seems to have no end. Apparently the students are to act as adults while the administrators adolescently throw all the blame for problems here on anyone but themselves. This "Police Yourself" campaign is a blatant effort to use alcohol as the scapegoat for the tragic events of this year. Maybe if they scare us into staying in our homes all weekend, then nothing bad will happen to us. Unfortunately, this is causing students to venture further from campus to have a good time. This is especially unfortunate since Ball State students aren't harming each other.

It is Muncie residents and the UPD who have harmed students. Not only this, but students are now deciding that driving drunk is less likely to land them in jail than walking home from the Village. I hope Dr. McConkey is pleased with his results.

A university is supposed to be a forum for free expression, ideas and knowledge flow. A place where young adults go to learn, grow and turn themselves into ethical professionals. It's been a long-held belief among students that the administration here cares more about buildings and money than its students. Now it seems we are just a captive audience for the administration's incessant propaganda.

Maybe they're right and we should "Police Ourselves" to keep ourselves safe. Maybe we should start by policing ourselves from the Muncie residents, the University Police Department and the example set by the current administration. That sounds like a good start.
