WOMEN'S TENNIS Cards score a weekend trifecta on road

Sweep included 7-0 victory at Youngstown Slate on Sunday

It was a long weekend for the women's tennis team, but only from the aspect of time. After facing Akron at 2 p.m. Friday, the team traveled to Buffalo on Saturday and Youngstown State of Sunday.

But, even with the long weekend, the Cardinals performed exceptionally well, winning all three matches, including a 7-0 victory over Youngstown State Sunday morning.

"I thought we progressed as the weekend went on," coach Kathy Bull said. "We played particularly well (Sunday) morning. We took care of business, that was the icing on the cake for a good weekend."

The three victories let the Cardinals (6-3, 2-0 Mid-American Conference) start their conference season off on the right foot. The Cardinals scored two 5-2 victories over Akron on Friday and Buffalo on Saturday to start their conference season.

"It's always pleasuring and excitable to start the conference season with a couple of victories," Bull said. "It really doesn't hurt, let's put it that way"

Katie Owens had a particularly good weekend, not dropping a match during the weekend.

"She got sick about halfway through the day on Friday," Bull said. "She still played really hard and won all three singles matches and all three doubles matches this weekend, I though that was a nice effort from her."

Even with this weekends victories, Coach Bull still sees some areas her team can improve on during the coming weeks.

"We still got some things were trying to work out, but we can do that the next few weeks when the conference record is not on the line," she said.

The Cardinals have a six-day break before they travel to Bloomington for a doubleheader against No. 26 Indiana and Indiana State.

After a weekend of traveling the long weekend is finally over for the Cardinals.

"It feels like a long weekend," Bull said. "It sure helps coming home with three wins in our pocket."
