SOFTBALL Catds face duo of Big Ten teams at Hawkeye Classic

BSU faces conference champion Iowa at midpoint of season

At the midway point of its season, the Ball State softball team travels to Iowa City, Iowa, for the Hawkeye Classic this weekend.

In the midst of a four game winning streak, the Cardinals (6-15) will face Big Ten teams Iowa and Wisconsin in a round robin format.

Iowa (15-12) is the defending Big Ten champion in both the regular season and tournament play. Thus far this season 15 of the 27 games the Hawkeyes have played in have resulted in shutouts, with nine being won by Iowa.

Lisa Birocci is the Hawkeye's leading pitcher and hitter. The defending Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, Birocci has 123 strikeouts to her credit, and leads the team with a .321 batting average.

Wisconsin (15-12) is led by Kris Zachler, who is batting .376, and has hit two home runs and 18 RBIs. Boo Gillette has a team best 19 RBIs and is hitting .346.

Both teams competed in the Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif. from March 19-21, although they didn't meet. Neither fared well, with Iowa finishing the tournament 1-4, and Wisconsin going 2-3. The Hawkeyes lost their last game to Nevada, 2-0 finishing with eight hits to Nevada's four. The Badgers defeated St. Mary's 6-3 in their last game of the Classic, with both teams connecting for seven hits. Zachler led the Badgers with two.

Ball State defeated Butler twice in a double-header Tuesday afternoon. In the first game, a 10-inning affair, Kelli Jeziorski led the way with three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. Darla Dewig added two hits, and Randi Freese struck out five while giving up five hits.

Dewig added two more hits for the Cardinals in game two, a game that was shortened to five innings due to lack of light, and Amy Brownfield threw a four-hit shutout to give the Cardinals their second win of the day.
