OUR VIEW Petition requires representation, not just signatures

AT ISSUE: Poor showing at protest hints at student apathy

Katie Carlson, University Senate member, and a group of about 15 students rallied in front of the Administration Building for another student representative on the Presidential Search Committee.

Student Government Association collected more than 700 signatures in support of another student representative only a few weeks ago. Where were all the students who signed the petition?

The time might not have been the best for many students. It's hard to believe, though, that all but 15 students were busy.

The presidential search is one of the most important issues facing Ball State. This is not a decision that will affect just a part of the student body. All students hold a stake in the outcome.

Students can't simply take the easy road and sign the petition. They need to continue demonstrations so that the Board of Trustees won't so easily ignore the student voice.

Both Ben Tietz and Jayson Manship, SGA presidential nominees, have stressed the importance of raising student awareness in campus issues.

Whoever wins today's SGA election needs to make it a priority to not only spread awareness of the presidential search but also make sure students understand the effect it will have on them.

The winning slate should not be discouraged by the turnout but continue to make sure all students learn about the presidential search and why they should care.

The more students are aware of the issue, the more students will show their support.

Carlson made the right move in organizing a rally.

Now it's up to the students to actually stand by what they sign.
